Overview: Gaming PC Build ( Under $1500 or $1300 )

This is the highest end gaming pc build here in Newb Computer Build’s Gaming PC Builds of the month articles and below you will find a solid 2017 gaming pc build able to rock any game out there. And unless you are a high-rolling baller that is seriously into the hobby side of building the most extravagant gaming pc build possible, a great budget then this is generally not worth it for your standard gamer; which these articles are meant for. This build will rock a 1440p (2K) resolution gaming and able to play comfortably into 4K (even more so should you get the GTX 1080 graphics card). Also if you look a little further below there are hardware upgrades for this build that all increase performance a step further to either further solidify those higher resolutions or future games should you have a higher budget for you pc build this January 2017.

For the CPU, we have an unlocked Intel i5 6600K cpu and we have paired this with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cpu cooler. You should be able to easily overclock this cpu while keeping it relatively cool with the Hyper 212 EVO.

The true driver behind those high demanding games in this build (and all gaming pc builds) is either the Gigabyte GTX 1080 OR  a EVGA GTX 1070 (choose one or the other). Now if you want the highest possible performing gaming pc in this build, then go with the GTX 1080 otherwise go with the GTX 1070 for great QHD (1440p) gameplay or the GTX 1080 for beyond that. Both are great cards and the GTX 1080 may be more for those who want to play the highest demanding of games at the highest frame rates easily at 1440p resolutions and do quite well at 4K.

For the all-mighty motherboard for this build, we have the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Ultra Gaming motherboard, which is simply a great all you need well rounded motherboard that also includes thunderbolt. Here is a full list of specifications for the GA-Z170x-Ultra (learn more at Gigabyte.com):

  • Intel® Thunderbolt™ 3 Certified Motherboard
  • Supports 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor
  • Dual Channel, Non-ECC Unbuffered DDR4, 4 DIMMs
  • Intel® USB 3.1 with USB Type-C™ & PD 2.0 100W Support
  • 2-Way SLI™ & CrossFire™ Multi-Graphics Support
  • NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 22110 M.2 Interface & U.2 Interface for Intel® SSD 750
  • Best Support for 3 Intel® SSD 750 Devices in RAID 0
  • 2 SATA Express Connectors for Up to 16Gb/s Data Transfer
  • Intel® GbE LAN with cFosSpeed Internet Accelerator Software
  • High Quality Audio Capacitors and Audio Noise Guard with Ambient LED Trace Path Lighting
  • Ultra Durable Metal Shielding over PCIe and DDR Slots
  • Ultra Durable Anti-Sulfur Resistors for Longer Lifespan
  • Ultra Durable Anti-Rust Rear I/O Connectors
  • Dual Hybrid Fan Headers with Precise PWM / Voltage Control for Water Pump & Fan
  • GIGABYTE UEFI DualBIOS™ Technology
  • APP Center Including EasyTune™ and Cloud Station™ Utilities
  • Rear Panel Mini DisplayPort-In for Future Feature Upgrade

The included RAM, we have 16GB (two 8GB sticks) with the included Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 RAM, which is plenty enough memory for most of any gaming pc builds, but there is still room to pump more into the builds should you want to in the future (plus it really isn’t a whole lot more than an 8GB kit at the moment).

The storage has changed once again back to the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD – which has simply been a quality SSD leader for a while now – even with the release of some newer SSDS – if you do want a bump up in storage speed you will need to check out a more expensive PCIe SSD (see alternatives below).

For the Power Supply Unit (PSU), we have switched to a more efficient EVGA SuperNOVA 750 P2, which is a Platinum rated more efficient PSU, compared to the previously included EVGA gold rated psu I had included in this gaming pc build previously (learn more at evga.com)

The included pc case for this $1300 2017 gaming pc build is the BitFenix Pandora ATX, which I love for it’s unique look and design, with plenty of cooling support, programmable ICON, a wide display window on the side and so much more (bitfenix.com):

January 2017 (Under $1300 or $1500) PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

The hardware upgrades you see here are recommendations for the above $1300 – $1500 1440p – 4K PC build for January 2017. You can choose one or all of the hardware and it will be compatible with the above build and improve it’s performance in some way. Should you purchase all of the hardware upgrades instead of the alternatives already in the main build – then it will cost you around $1817 as of the start of the start of January 2017.

You can get an Intel i7 6700K cpu if you do things like video work, graphics work etc. since this isn’t really needed for pure gaming – plus this cpu is much cheaper than it used to be. This could also be a worthy upgrade for those wanting to further “future-proof” their high-end build.

The above gaming pc build a regular SATA SSD, which is perfectly suited for most gamers, although below is a faster Samsung 950 PRO PCIe SSD, which has faster read / write times and also 500GB of storage – a real premium PCIe Solid State Drive.

If you want more than the included air cpu cooler included in the main build, then below is the Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 liquid cpu cooler. This cooler would be a substitute for the above included Hyper 212 EVO air cpu cooler and would provide a quieter, more efficient / more customized cooling experience. This option would be best purchased now rather then later so as to save on buying only one cooler for your PC (learn more at corsair.com).

Now for the ultimate increase in graphics performance and for those who have a huge chunk of change, one could consider the NVIDIA TITAN X. This graphics card would be fore 1 those with money; and two those who want to maximize their gaming performance in the 4K resolution realm. The TITAN X has a nearly 30% increase in performance over the GTX 1080, but it comes at a price premium of $1200+.

CPU UPGRADE

Here are some peripheral ideas for our under $1300 – $1500 2017 PC build. This is a new section this month and in the past we did peripheral articles separately, but since some individuals have had questions with regards to what best peripherals should go with their builds, I thought I would package these into the builds this month.

Below is a monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at 1440p into frame rates able to match its 144hz refresh rates. Also included is a premium mechanical keyboard and premium gaming pc mouse.

Overview: $1000 2017 Gaming PC Build

For under $1000, you can build a pc that will conquer most of any game at 1080p into 2K resolutions like slicing butter with a flaming hot knife.  This is a High-End gaming PC build, a gaming pc build that will probably cover most of any average gamer needs. This is a build I would recommend to those wanting a well rounded pc build that covers both enthusiast and regular gamer realms of performance.

This build uses a combination of the Intel i5 6600K processor and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 cpu cooler (as you do need a cooler as there is no stock one included with the 6600k), plus the hyper 212 helps tremendously when oveclocking that unlocked 6600k processor leaving with tons of possibilities.

For the graphics cards included in the less than $1000 build I have left it up to you (the builder) with two card options – the first the NVIDIA EVGA ACX GTX 1060 and the second is the ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 480 graphics card. Both of these cards can be similar in cost and performance they do differ in specific games so please do look up some benchmarks. A great benchmark overview can be found through hardwareunboxed.com GTX 1060 benchmarks in various games – this guy does a spot on job bench-marking, so I highly recommend watching this before deciding, or just go for it (like I said they do really perform similarly overall).

The motherboard included for the $1000 January 2017 PC Build is the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3.  The Gaming 3 motherboard has the following specifications (and you can learn more on the product page at gigabyte.com and see the specifications listed below or check out Gigabytes overview video on YoutTube):

  • Supports 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor
  • Dual Channel DDR4, 4 DIMMs
  • Intel® USB 3.1 with USB Type-C™ – The World’s Next Universal Connector
  • 3-Way Graphics Support with Exclusive Ultra Durable Metal Shielding over the PCIe Slots
  • Dual PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 Connectors with up to 32Gb/s Data Transfer (PCIe NVMe & SATA SSD support)
  • 3 SATA Express Connectors for up to 16Gb/s Data Transfer
  • 115dB SNR HD Audio with Built-in Rear Audio Amplifier
  • Killer™ E2200 Gaming Networks
  • High Quality Audio Capacitors and Audio Noise Guard with LED Trace Path Lighting
  • APP Center Including EasyTune™ and Cloud Station™ Utilities
  • GIGABYTE UEFI DualBIOS™ Technology

The RAM included is the affordable kit of Ballistix Sport LT 8GB kit, which is enough memory for most standard gaming pc builds, and you always have the option to upgrade more in the future if need be with the extra couple of slots on the included motherboard.

For storage we have a 250GB SK Hynix Flash SSD, this is a newer storage piece for this build and is a great bang for your buck newer SSD model – an alternative should this ssd not be in stock is the Samsung 850 EVO, which is a tad better although more expensive.

The included power supply unit (and for some time now in this build) used is the EVGA SuperNOVA G1 650W power supply, which is a great PSU with all modular cables and it provides the perfect amount of power for this build along with room for some upgrades. For it’s price, quality and the fact that it’s modular makes this a perfect choice.

Now to wrap this build up we have to include a pc case – with so many choices out there, the case sometimes comes down to personal preference and style. This month I have included the NZXT S340, a long standing quality modern case that provides all you need in most gaming pc builds and with a sleek look. comes in a few different color variations.

NZXT S340 Features (learn more at NZXT.com):

  • 360° of steel casing surrounding the all-steel chassis
  • Grommet-less cable management bar keeps cables tidy with ease
  • Full 280mm radiator support for the latest Kraken cooler
  • Compact form factor coming in two inches below competing mid towers
  • Detailed design and engineering with tons of small touches
  • Very easy to build in for new and experienced users alike
  • Integrated PSU shroud for an ultra clean build
  • Fully filtered intakes

January 2017 $1000 PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

Here are some upgrade ideas for your under $1000 January 2017 pc build depending on your budget or future performance upgrade.

For a further boost in graphics you could consider going straight for a GTX 1070 graphics card, which could max those games out in 2K without a hiccup enabling higher frame rates in more demanding games.

If you want more than the included 256GB storage SSD in the main build, you could consider bumping your SSD up to a slight faster 500GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD instead giving you nearly double the space – you can also note that this is an even higher performing SSD than the included SSD in the $1300 build for this month / which can also be a slightly cheaper 500GB SSD alternative.

You could also go with a liquid cpu cooler such as the Corsair Hydro Series H80i V2 in place of the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO  air cooler already included in the above build. This could help keep things quiet and a tad cooler when overclocking and it offers a more customize cooling experience (learn more about the Corsair h80i GT at Corsair.com).

I have also included a PSU upgrade this month – that is the EVGA 650Watt P2, which is a Platinum rated Power Supply Unit giving you an extra boost in power efficiency, which could save a tad on power as it uses it more efficiently. To learn more about the EVGA P2 specifications please visit the EVGA P2 information page.

BUILD COST WITH ALL BELOW UPGRADES: $1356

Peripheral Ideas (Monitor Keyboard & Mouse) for the January 2017  $1000 PC Build

Here are some peripheral ideas for our under $1000 January 2017 PC build. These are optional to the above build, but are suggestions in case you are starting fresh and need them (as you will need a monitor, mouse and keyboard!).

Below is a monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at high FPS no problem at 1080p without a hiccup (keep in mind that you can go into 1440p if you wanted). Also included is a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx switches with plenty of features and a mouse catered to high precision FPS players.

Monitor

Overview: $600 Gaming PC Build

The under $600 gaming pc build is the go-to build that is probably what most gamers need. This build is capable of pushing most modern games at higher settings with a standard HD 1080p monitor without a problem at all – and on a budget!

The cpu in this build is the Intel Core i3 6100, this should be great in most games as generally they are more gpu dependent, but if you do want a boost in more cpu dependent games you can consider an Intel i5 (such as in the hardware upgrade suggestions below).

To pair with the Intel i3 6100, we have an RX 470 4GB graphics card. This is a great card for pushing those 1080p games, however if you do want a slightly bigger bump you could consider and Rx 480 4GB graphics card for only $20-$30 more sometimes.

The motherboard this month to an ASRock ATX H170 PRO4, this is a great value board that is perfect for locked cpus (such as the Intel i3 6100 included in the build) and has capability for 7.1 audio and is very efficient for a value board. Some other features include (learn more at asrock.com):

  • ASRock Super Alloy
  • Supports 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors (Socket 1151)
  • Digi Power, 10 Power Phase design
  • Supports Dual Channel DDR4 2133
  • 2 PCIe 3.0 x16, 3 PCIe 3.0 x1
  • AMD Quad CrossFireX™, CrossFireX™
  • Graphics Output Options: DVI-D, HDMI
  • 7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC892 Audio Codec), ELNA Audio Caps
  • 1 SATA Express, 6 SATA3, 1 Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3)
  • 8 USB 3.0 (2 Front, 6 Rear)
  • Supports Full Spike Protection, ASRock Live Update & APP Shop

For RAM we have a kit of Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 8GB which is plenty RAM for this build. And for storage we again included the previous SK Hynix 120GB SSD – and for those that want the 256GB you only need to spend about another $20.

The power supply has been switched up again this month to the EVGA 500 W1, with enough juice to power this build.

For the enclosure for the $600 pc build chosen is Cooler Master’s MasterBox 5 Mid Tower PC case. With flexible mounting, a decent amount of expansion support, clean cable management and compact cooling, the MasterBox 5 is a great budget pc case that looks professional. For a real in-depth view of the MasterBox 5 please visit the feature page at coolermaster.com.

January 2017 $600 PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

These are the upgrade suggestions for specific hardware included in the above $600 / 1080p 2017 gaming pc build. You can choose to upgrade one of all of the hardware and each will provide a performance boost for this build. If you choose to upgrade using all of the below hardware, the build becomes more like an $800ish gaming pc build with some added performance.

If you want to dial down those cpu temps you could always opt for a non-stock cpu cooler, such as the infamous Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (included in both of the other builds for quite some time).

One of the more important performance upgrade solutions could be the Radeon RX 480 4GB graphics card, for not much more in cost.

You can increase your storage space by going with a faster and larger Samsung 850 EVO 256GB SSD – another alternative would be to also simply bump up the included SK Hynix 120GB SSD to the 256GB version for a little less than the Samsung 850 EVO.

Finally, included is a much better performing gaming CPU, the Intel i5 6500, which may be a worthy investment to solidify performance in those higher cpu demanding games.

CPU COOLER UPGRADE

Better CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO ($34.99)

GRAPHICS CARD UPGRADE

ASUS Dual-Fan Radeon Rx 480 4GB OC Edition AMD Gaming Graphics Card ($217.53)

CPU UPGRADE

Higher performing Processor – Intel Core i5-6500 3.20Ghz Processor  (Price: $199.99)

STORAGE UPGRADE

Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM)($94.99)

Peripheral Ideas (Monitor Keyboard & Mouse) for the January 2017 Under $600 PC Build

Here are some peripheral ideas for the $600 2017 PC build. Below is a 24-inch monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at 1080p standard HD resolutions. The included keyboard is a basic cherry mx mechanical keyboard without any special features, but everything most gamers really need. Also included is a basic gaming pc mouse with plenty of features.

Monitor

BenQ ZOWIE [New] 24-Inch Console eSports Gaming Monitor – LED 1080p HD Monitor – (RL2455) ($199.99)

This is BenQ’s new brand of monitors – this one is a 24 inch 60Hz 1080p LED monitor.

Keyboard

CHERRY MX-Board 3.0 Mechanical USB Keyboard with Cherry MX Red Switch (G80-3850LYBEU-2) ($80.99)

This is a sturdy basic mechanical cherry mx switch gaming keyboard – not a ton of customization, but in my opinion all you really need for a quality gaming keyboard with the tactile responsiveness of a mechanical keyboard.

Mouse

Logitech G302 Daedalus Prime MOBA Gaming Mouse ($26.12)

An affordable gaming mouse with lots of programmable buttons and on the fly dpi switching.

Operating System Options for the January 2017 Gaming PC Builds

If you don’t already have an operating system for your new gaming pc build, then you’re going to have to either invest in purchasing a standard OS such as Windows 10. Otherwise, there are some free alternatives that you could consider below as well. Keep in mind that it is recommended to purchase Windows online or as a USB stick and install it that way as optical drives are not included in any of these builds and nor would you generally need one for any modern gaming pc.

Included below is a USB copy of Windows 10, which is probably what most people need. I have also included two other operating systems that are both currently free. Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system. The last OS is SteamOS, which is also a Linux OS being developed by Valve Corporation and is being made to be used for a Steam Machine game console.

Windows 8.1 Microsoft Windows 10 Home USB Flash Drive

*This is the USB version, you can also purchase the DVD (which requires an Optical Drive) or purchase a downloaded copy, which would require you to install on to a USB or hard drive from another PC.
