The October AMD builds were delayed to the release of socket FM2 on the 2nd of October. Due to the newness of the hardware, there are no benchmark results available, so you can’t really compare this build with Corey’s equivalent at the moment.
When bundled with the Asus Motherboard, you save $10. See here. The FM2 series is a massive improvement over the FM1, particularly in the graphics department. This CPU may be a little slower then last months $500 build CPU, but the graphics are much better in this build.
Like in Corey’s equivalent build, I have opted for a PSU with continuous power flow. This PSU is 80 plus certified and 500W’s is plenty for this build.
In this month’s $1000 build, due to price drops in some areas of the build, I’ve managed to squeeze a GTX 680 graphics card in. The GTX 680 far exceeds the 7950 in Corey’s build and it shows in the benchmarks. For this month’s builds, I’ve decided to get benchmarks that have the CPUs at turbo clock speeds rather than random speeds, to make the results even more accurate. The results are seen below. http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/4524317/3dm11/4114695
This is the top of the range AMD CPU and is about $50 cheaper than the 3570K now after a $20 price drop. Unlike the 3570K, this CPU is an octo-core (8-core CPU) so this CPU is better designed for multi-tasking. And this CPU is super easy to overclock.
This motherboard is the same as the one used in the previous months build, but has had a $10 drop. It can take 32GB of ram, plenty of USB ports and supports 2-way SLI and 2-way crossfire (which is the norm on today’s boards). What more could you want?
I choose this kit again because of its price and it leaves 2 spare slots for future upgrades. In the long run, it saves you having to buy 4 modules later down the track. The kit has had a minor price drop from last month.
Due to the price drops in other departments, I have been able to add this beast of a graphics card, it far exceeds the 7950 in Corey’s builds as seen in the benchmarks.
This month, due to price drops in many areas of the build, I’ve managed to get a crossfire setup in the $1500 build. This improves the performance greatly and when compared to Corey’s $1500 build, you notice the difference. The results can be seen below and at http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/3495985/3dm11/4404318 .

Tests have shown that air cooling is just as effective as water cooling so this month I’ve decided to include and air cooler rather than a water cooler.
This month I have managed to squeeze a crossfire setup in. I originally had a GTX 680 pencilled in, but there was quite a bit cash left over, so I opted for a 7950 crossfire setup. Benchmarks have shown two of these cards to be better than a single GTX 680
I choose this because it provides you with plenty of storage for all the essentials, and you shouldn’t run out anytime soon. There has been a minor price drop from last month.
This PSU has enough power to run everything with power to spare, if need be you could throw the 1200W Corsair professional Series PSU in but you shouldn’t need that much power.
CPU: AMD FX 4170 4.2 GHz $119
Mobo: MSI 990XA-GD55 AM3+ $90 after rebate.
RAM: 8GB Kingston Technology HyperX 1333 MHz RAM (2 x 4 GB Modules) $40
Graphics Card: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 $300
HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB Hard Drive $70
PSU: COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus 500w $30 after rebate. if you can put a little extra in id go the Antec HCG-620M 620W $80
Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 912 $50 after rebate
Optical: ASUS 24X DVD Burner $20
Total: $719 with rebates all prices off newegg
Very similar to Septembers $500 build, just a few tweaks & improvements.
If you plan to game id suggest the 8150 as it is cheaper, but if your going to do video encoding for instance, i’d go the 3570k. 3570k is good for gaming also. if you look here http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html you’ll find that the 8150 is a better CPU.

What about the new AMD FX-8320 or the FX-8350 ? Would they replace the FX-8150 in the November build?? Nice job!
The new FX Cpu’s will be in november builds
Thanks! Do you have any intermediate builds like say 700ish?
I’ll get back to you with one 😉

If anyone decides to do the $500 build, this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrEkqyREQes will show you how to set up the APU + GPU crossfire 😉
