November 2016 Gaming PC Builds Introduction

Welcome to the November 2016 update to the Monthly Gaming PC Builds here at Newb Computer Build. If you are a new pc builder or simply looking for your next best build, then you are at the right place. Below you will find a few builds with a ton of options in between for upgrades that I’m sure you will be excited about when planning a build within your budget. All of the included builds can max out standard 1920×1080 HD resolutions in most of any pc games, so it’s just about planning exactly how high over and above that you are expecting to pump your build too. The builds included are under $1500, $1000 and $600.

I typically get super excited for November’s PC Builds because this month holds so much potential for those wanting to purchase their hardware at great prices. Not only does the holiday rush start with many vendors offering great discounts, but November holds Black Friday and Cybere Monday, of which both days are splendid at offering deals on specific hardware – so keep an eye out throughout the month for hardware deals. Also if I could ask a favor for those that DO find any good deals, that you are more than welcome to share them in the comments section below this article for others to share in as well. Happy building and as per usual, if you have any questions when planning your latest build  you can also ask away in the comments below.

Overview: Gaming PC Build ( Under $1500 )

This is the highest end build included in the monthly pc builds set and is for those who want to maximize performance anywhere from 1440p (2K) and able to play scaled down a tad all the way into 4K. Also if you look a little further below there are hardware upgrades for this build that all increase performance a step further to either further solidify those higher resolutions or future games should you have a higher budget for you pc build this November.

For the CPU, we have an Intel i5 6600K cpu and paired with it is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 cpu cooler. With the affordable Hyper 212, you will be able to overclocking the 6600K processor with no problems at all, and the temps will be kept at bay.

The true driver behind those high demanding games, is the ASUS GTX 1070 graphics card. This graphics card has so much potential and bang for your buck that you won’t regret including it as your main performance driver in this build for gaming. To give you an idea of some benchmarks of the GTX 1070 you can check out any of these fantastic reviews: Guru3DThe TechReport  – TomsHardware and many more.

For the all-mighty motherboard, we have the MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon, which includes everything you need with a few neat additions like Mystic Lighting, Gaming LAN and more. See the motherboard specifications below or learn more at MSI.com or if you want to read a solid review please check out bit-tech.com’s review on the MSI Z170 Gaming PRO Carbon.

The included RAM, we have 16GB (two 8GB sticks) with the included Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) memory kit, which is plenty enough memory for most of any gaming pc builds, but there is still room to pump more into the builds should you want to in the future.

For our storage this month, we have changed the SSD slightly to a SK Hynix Flash Memory 500 GB from the previous Samsung we have had in this spot as of late; this is the same storage space, but a much better bang for your buck. In benchmarks it was found that the SK Hynix SSD’s performed just behind the Samsung 850 Evo SSDs and would be unnoticeable by standard users making it a greta bang for buck purchase.

For the Power Supplt Unit (PSU), included is the EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2, which gets the job done just the samehowever if you do  want a more power efficient pus of the same power capacity, then you do still have the option of the EVGA SuperNOVA 750 p2 for a tad more cash.

Now for the PC case for this less than $1500 November 2016 PC Build we have a brand spanking new 2016 Rosewill CULLINAN Mid Tower pc case – with tempered glass panels, supporting long graphics cards and plenty plenty cooling with four fan pre-installed (read the full specifications at rosewill.com and a full review at techpowerup.com).

November 2016 (Under $1500) PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

$1817 if all upgrades are included

The hardware upgrades you see here are recommendations for the above 1440p – 4K PC build for November 2016. You can choose one or all of the hardware and it will be compatible with the above build and improve it’s performance in some way. Should you purchase all of the hardware upgrades instead of the alternatives already in the main build – then it will cost you around $1817 as of the start of the start of November 2016.

You can get an Intel i7 6700K cpu if you do things like video work, graphics work etc. since this isn’t really needed for pure gaming – plus this cpu is much cheaper than it used to be. This could also be a worthy upgrade for those wanting to further “future-proof” their high-end build.

The above gaming pc build a regular SATA SSD, which is perfectly suited for most gamers, although below is a faster Samsung 950 PRO PCIe SSD, which has faster read / write times and also 500GB of storage – a real premium PCIe Solid State Drive.

If you want more than the included air cpu cooler included in the main build, then below is the Corsair Hydro Series H100i V2 liquid cpu cooler. This cooler would be a substitute for the above included Hyper 212 EVO air cpu cooler and would provide a quieter, more efficient / more customized cooling experience. This option would be best purchased now rather then later so as to save on buying only one cooler for your PC (learn more at corsair.com).

For the biggest gaming performance improvement out of the included hardware included in the alternative section, consider a GTX 1080 graphics card included as an alternative option to the GTX 1070 included in the main build for November 2016. The cost of this card is the lowest its been, so it’s definitely a better time to purchase (perhaps if you want to game into the 144fps range).

Peripheral Ideas (Monitor Keyboard & Mouse) for the November 2016 Under $1500 PC Build

Here are some peripheral ideas for our under $1500 PC build. This is a new section this month and in the past we did peripheral articles separately, but since some individuals have had questions with regards to what best peripherals should go with their builds, I thought I would package these into the builds this month.

Below is a monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at 1440p into frame rates able to match its 144hz refresh rates. Also included is a premium mechanical keyboard and premium gaming pc mouse.

Overview: Gaming PC Build ( $1000 )

For under $1000, you can get one kick but gaming PC build – playing all games maxed out at 1920×1080 resolutions and into 1440p / 2K resolutions smoothly and at higher settings. This is the High-End gaming PC build, a gaming pc build that will probably cover most of any average gamers needs. This would be the build I would recommend to those wanting a well rounded pc build that covers both enthusiast and regular gamer grounds of performance.

This build uses a combination of the Intel i5 6600K cpu and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 cpu cooler (as you do need a cooler as there is no stock one included with the 6600k), plus the hyper 212 helps tremendously when oveclocking that unlocked 6600k processor leaving with tons of possibilities. As I mentioned in the build above – for those interested in educating themselves around overclocking you can check out a recent article from the TomsHardware CPU overclocking guide.

For the graphics cards included in the less than $1000 build  we have two card options – the first the NVIDIA GTX 1060 and the second is the AMD RX 480 graphics card. Both of these cards can be similar in cost and performance they do differ in specific games so please do look up some benchmarks (via Google or YouTube) for some of the games you may be interested in. For some links to such benchmarks please refer back to the introduction of this article.

The motherboard included again this month for the $1000 November 2016 PC Build is the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3.  The Gaming 3 motherboard has the following specifications (and you can learn more on the product page at gigabyte.com or check out Gigabytes overview video on YoutTube):

The RAM included is the affordable kit of Kingston HyperX FURY Black 8GB Kit (2x4GB) kit,which is enough memory for most standard gaming pc builds, and you always have the option to upgrade more in the future if need be with the extra couple of slots on the included motherboard.

The included storage is a 250GB SK Hynix Flash SSD, this is a new storage piece for this build and is a great bang for your buck newer SSD model.

The included power supply unit (and for some time now in this build) used is the EVGA SuperNOVA G1 650W power supply, which is a great PSU with all modular cables and it provides the perfect amount of power for this build along with room for some upgrades. For it’s price, quality and the fact that it’s modular makes this a perfect choice.

The PC case for this high end November 2016 gaming pc build is the BitFenix Aurora, which is also a new pc case. This case was given a 96% rating by TweakTown and is what BitFenix describes as simplicity with elegance in mind. For a full overview please check out BitFenix’s video on their Aurora case:

November 2016 (Under $1000) PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

$1356 is all upgrades are included

Here are some upgrade ideas for your under $1000 November 2016 pc build depending on your budget or future performance upgrade – perhaps more than $1000.

For a further boost in graphics you could consider going straight for a GTX 1070 graphics card, which could max those games out in 2K without a hiccup enabling higher frame rates in more demanding games.

If you want more than the included 250GB storage SSD in the main build, you could consider bumping your SSD up to a slight faster 480GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD instead giving you nearly double the space – you can also note that this is an even higher performing SSD than the included SSD in the $1300 build for this month / which can also be a slightly cheaper 500GB SSD alternative.

You could also go with a liquid cpu cooler such as the Corsair Hydro Series H80i V2 in place of the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO  air cooler already included in the above build. This could help keep things quiet and a tad cooler when overclocking and it offers a more customize cooling experience (learn more about the Corsair h80i GT at Corsair.com).

I have also included a PSU upgrade this month – that is the EVGA 650Watt P2, which is a Platinum rated PUS giving you an extra boost in power efficiency, which could save a tad on power as it uses it more efficiently. To learn more about the EVGA P2 specifications please visit the EVGA P2 information page.

Peripheral Ideas (Monitor Keyboard & Mouse) for the November 2016 Under $1000 PC Build

Here are some peripheral ideas for our under $1000 PC build. This is a new section this month and in the past we did peripheral articles separately, but since some individuals have had questions with regards to what best peripherals should go with their builds, I thought I would package these into the builds this month.

Below is a monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at high FPS no problem at 1080p without a hiccup (keep in mind that you can go into 1440p if you wanted). Also included is a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx switches with plenty of features and a mouse catered to high precision FPS players.

Monitor

ViewSonic XG2401 24-inch 144Hz 1080p Gaming Display with 1ms, HDMI, DisplayPort and FreeSync Technology ($259.99)

A great 144Hz 1080p Monitor for those fast refresh rates at 1080p; also comes in a 27 inch model.

Keyboard

A mechanical keyboard with a ton of macro keys with a crisp tactile feel.

Mouse

Corsair Gaming M65 FPS Gaming Mouse, Aircraft-Grade Aluminum, 8200 DPI ($39.99)

This is a great mouse built for comfort and precision, making it a great choice for those players needing to be as precise as possible (such as with high FPS gameplay).

Overview: Under $600 Gaming PC Build

Here is the less than $600 build for those gamers who just want to get straight to the point – gaming at max settings in games at 1080p. This build includes an Intel i3 6100 – a dual core cpu clocked in at 3.7 GHz and when paired with the AMD RX470, then we are clear sailing. Please check out the benchmarks over at this digitalfoundry video you can see how very awesomely powered this graphics card is for its cost per performance value.

Due to a huge price bump in the previously included motherboard we had to get rid of it and put in an Asus H170-PRO. The H170-Pro by Asus is a well rounded flagship H170 motherboard perfect for this build and it bosts the following features (asus.com):

  • 5X Protection II – Advanced hardware safeguards for all-round protection
  • USB Type-C for convenient connectivity
  • Epic gaming audio with noise-isolation design
  • Media-acclaimed UEFI BIOS with EZ Flash 3
  • Fan Xpert 3 advanced fan controls for ultimate cooling and silent performance
  • Lightning-fast M.2 with PCIe® 3.0 x4 interface

For RAM we have a kit of Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB kit and for storage we have a SK Hynix 120GB SSD, which is the same type included in all of the builds for November as they are a great performing SSD at a current great cost performing veryu similar to the Samsung 850 EVOs.

The power supply has been switched up again this month to the EVGA 500 W1, with enough juice to power this build all the way.

For the gaming pc case this month in the under  $600 November pc build we have a Rosewill CHALLENGER Gaming case – this case comes pre-installed with a few fans, a metal mesh grill, screw less design, and more – this case as described by Rosewill themselves is “…ideal for computer builders who’s rather spend their money on the contents than on the case!”

November 2016 (Under $600) PC Build Upgrade Suggestions

$800 if all upgrades are included

These are the upgrade suggestions for specific hardware included in the above $600 / 1080p pc build. You can choose to upgrade one of all of the hardware and each will provide a performance boost for this build. If you choose to upgrade using all of the below hardware, the build becomes more like an $800 gaming pc build with some added performance.

If you want to dial down those cpu temps you could always opt for a non-stock cpu cooler, such as the infamous Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (included in both of the other builds for quite some time).

One of the more important upgrade solutions could be the brand new AMD RX 470 graphics card and for the upgrades we have a Radeon RX 480, which is the suggested step up; this graphics card is also included in the $1000 gaming pc build.

You can increase your storage space by going with the SK Hynix 250GB SSD instead of the included 120GB version included in the under $600 build.

Finally, included is a much better performing gaming CPU, the Intel i5 6500, which may be a worthy investment to solidify performance in those higher cpu demanding games.

BUILD COST WITH ALL BELOW UPGRADES: $800

CPU COOLER UPGRADE

Better CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO ($27.98)

GRAPHICS CARD UPGRADE

MSI GAMING RX 480 GDDR5 8GB CrossFire VR Ready FinFET DirectX 12 Graphics Card (Radeon RX 480 GAMING X 8G) ($279.99)

Peripheral Ideas (Monitor Keyboard & Mouse) for the November 2016 Under $600 PC Build

Here are some peripheral ideas for our under $600 PC build. This is a new section this month and in the past we did peripheral articles separately, but since some individuals have had questions with regards to what best peripherals should go with their builds, I thought I would package these into the builds this month.

Below is a monitor that would go best with this build since it is capable of pumping games with high settings at 1080p standard HD resolutions. The included keyboard is a basic cherry mx mechanical keyboard without any special features, but everything most gamers really need. Also included is a basic gaming pc mouse with plenty of features.

Monitor

BenQ ZOWIE [New] 24-Inch Console eSports Gaming Monitor – LED 1080p HD Monitor – (RL2455) ($199.99)

This is BenQ’s new brand of monitors – this one is a 24 inch 60Hz 1080p LED monitor.

Keyboard

CHERRY MX-Board 3.0 Mechanical USB Keyboard with Cherry MX Red Switch (G80-3850LYBEU-2) ($80.95)

This is a sturdy basic mechanical cherry mx switch gaming keyboard – not a ton of customization, but in my opinion all you really need for a quality gaming keyboard with the tactile responsiveness of a mechanical keyboard.

Mouse

Logitech G302 Daedalus Prime MOBA Gaming Mouse ($29.99)

An affordable gaming mouse with lots of programmable buttons and on the fly dpi switching.

Operating System Options for the November 2016 Gaming PC Builds

If you don’t already have an operating system for your new gaming pc build, then you’re going to have to either invest in purchasing a standard OS such as Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10. Otherwise, there are some free alternatives that you could consider below as well. Keep in mind that you will need an optical drive should you decide to purchase the install discs, however you can also purchase Windows online or as a USB stick and install it that way – this would be the process for installing your OS without an optical drive (which isn’t included in each of the base builds above).

The following are some operating systems you can consider installing upon putting your Gaming PC build together. The first three will cost you and are either Windows 7 or 8.1, or 10 – I have no opinions here so I’ll leave the purchase of these up to the discretion of yourself, but do keep in mind that either way you do have the option of upgrading to Windows 10 for now. I have also included two other operating systems that are both currently free. Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system. The last OS is SteamOS, which is also a Linux OS being developed by Valve Corporation and is being made to be used for a Steam Machine game console.

Hey, you are on the right track. Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much about the specific 1080 – I’ve heard about the thermal issues some may have on the EVGA FTW, but that issue was rare and has since been fixed on all cards post September 2016, so it would be a great choice in my opinion. That or even the SC model.

As for a motherboard, there is a very small amount of z170 motherboards with wifi and they are expensive. However just buy a pcie or usb wireless card or stick that you can plug into any motherboard, they go for less than $20 usually. But if you insist on a motherboard with built in wifi you could check out the MSI Z170A Tomahawk AC. Both bluetooth and wifi are cheap accessories (ie bluetooth usb less than 10 bucks on amazon and wifi usb about $10-$20 the same)

Oh I think it would for sure be fine for long gaming sessions, it’s a great air cooler. An alternative could be the liquid one mentioned instead in the alternatives? The Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 or Corsair H80i, just a tad more expensive, but are more quiet and a tad more efficient.

I would like to upgrade the video card, I also know that I need to upgrade the PSU. Where do I start and what are your recommendations. I would limit the card under $ 200, and the GPU around $100. This is a church computer, i want to upgrade but not enough to build from scratch. If there are other upgrades, i welcome your suggestions. Thank you.

  3. Hey how’s it going? I am frequently on the internet doing intense work for school and general browsing. I want a pc that I can use everyday for school, work, and intense browsing and gaming as well. Do you still recommend me getting this high end build.

      Very good thank you Ivan!

Since school work and general browsing in itself wouldn’t necessarily require a powerful pc, I would say that if that was all you were doing then you could get away with a cheaper pc. Otherwise if you are also wanting to game, I would then base it on at what resolution and settings. Such as if you have a basic 1080p display, I would just go with the $600 build and you’ll do just fine! Let me know if you have any further questions

  4. Hey Corey,

Do you do Black Friday/ Cyber Monday Builds? Also, do you think it’s worth waiting to see if I can snag a good deal on a GPU and other parts?

    Thanks,

    Troy

      Hi Xavier,

If your budget allows, then by all means that would be a great purchase – and if your budget is a little less you could opt for the GTX 1070 as well, which is still a fantastic performer, depends on what you’re going to be playing and at what resolutions.

      Hope this helps.

      Hi Aaron,

The builds looks good if you can fit it into your $500 budget comfortably. My only suggestion would be to consider getting an SSD instead of just the Seagate, but thats completely up to you. I know you will get much less storage space for the same cost, but it makes a word of difference in terms of performance – and then if you save $50 more then purchase the Seagate to accommodate that extra needed space.

Let me know if you have any moire questions and good luck building when you purchase!
